Shot NJ Cabbie in Critical Condition

Authorities are trying to determine if the shooting is connected to a similar incident in Newark on Saturday

A Jersey City cab driver who was shot by a passenger early Monday is in critical condition, authorities said.

It is still not clear what sparked the shooting.

City spokesman Stan Eason says the driver, a 42-year-old city resident, picked up the fare around 1 a.m. Monday in the Journal Square area. The driver was shot a short time later, as he was taking the passenger to the city's Greenville section.

Police have not released a description of the assailant, who fled the scene on foot. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and said the taxi struck two parked cars.

Authorities are trying to determine if the shooting is connected to a similar incident in Newark on Saturday, where police responding to an accident call and discovered a cab driver had been fatally shot.
