Woman Allegedly Set on Fire by Husband During Argument Dies a Day Later

A 69-year-old man is expected to face upgraded charges after his wife died from injuries suffered when he allegedly set her on fire during an argument inside the couple's upstate New York home over the weekend, authorities say.

Police in Schenectady say a fire was reported around 6 a.m. Saturday at the home of 48-year-old Elizabeth Gonzales and Antonio Bargallo. A neighbor awoken by Gonzales' screams used a blanket to put out her flaming clothes.

Officials say Gonzales told police her husband threw gasoline on her and set her on fire. She was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, where she died Sunday morning.

The charges against Bargallo include attempted murder. Police say the charge likely will be upgraded to second-degree murder.

He's being held in the county jail without bail. It couldn't be determined from prosecutors if he has a lawyer.
