A 10-year-old girl drowned while playing in the water off Coney Island Tuesday evening, police say.
Authorities say Takara McDuffy, of Staten Island, was playing on a jetty on the beach with her friends when she fell off the rocks into the water.
A lifeguard and nearby beach-goers searched frantically for the girl, according to witnesses. She was pulled from the water at about 6:30 p.m.
She was taken to Coney Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead,
A witness said he saw emergency responders performing CPR for several minutes on the girl, and that they were still trying to resuscitate her as they took her to the ambulance.
"I was hoping and praying they could revive her and wake her up," said Mike Boykin.
