Girl Critical after SUV Crashes into Fire Department Vehicle: Police

An 11-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday following a head-on crash of a sports utility vehicle and a fire department chief's vehicle on Long Island, police said.

Ismeily Perdomo-Hernandez was thrown from a sports utility vehicle operated by her mother after it struck a Hauppauge Fire Department chief's vehicle on Wheeler Road in Hauppauge, said Suffolk County police.

Iris Hernandez, of Bay Shore, told police she had lost control of her SUV and it spun into oncoming traffic, investigators said.

Her daughter was admitted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

Hernandez's son, Immer, 9, and her sister, Cindy Hernandez, 29, were also taken to the hospital with injuries that police said weren't life threatening.

The driver of the fire department vehicle, whose identity wasn't released by police, was also taken to the Stony Brook hospital with injuries that police said weren't life threatening.

The accident occurred at about 11:15 a.m. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Suffolk County police.
