DA to Probe Day Care Center Where Toddler Died

The Nassau County district attorney's office says it has opened a a criminal investigation into a Long Island day care center where a 2-year-old choked to death on a carrot stick.

A spokesman for District Attorney Kathleen Rice says the Carousel Day School in Hicksville, where the girl choked, and the Maplewood School, partially owned by Carousel's owner Eugene Formica, will be investigated.

The 2-year-old died Tuesday. Police say Olivia Raspanti of Hicksville found the raw carrot stick in her teacher's tote bag.

State officials shut down the day care center the next day, saying there were no records of the facility being issued a license to operate a day care center.

Formica says the Carousel Day School was in compliance with all state day care regulations. But he says it never applied for a license.
