Commissioner Kelly Heads to Haiti to Help Rebuilding Efforts

Six NYPD officers sent to Haiti to aide in rebuilding of security forces.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly is soaking up the sun --  but he's not on vacation.

Kelly headed to Port au Prince, Haiti today where he scheduled to meet with Haitian President Rene Preval and key members of the president’s staff to discuss American support in the rebuilding Haiti’s security forces, according to officials.

The meetings are sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and were planned to last roughly all day. The meetings are held in advance of the assignment of six Creole-speaking NYPD officers to Haiti later this month.

The State Department will cover the cost of the officer’s salaries and all other costs connected to the trip.

The six officers are assigned to help train and assist Haitian police in improving security in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010.

Commissioner Kelly has previously served in a similar capacity. Kelly helped establish an interim police force in Haiti as a member of the Director of International Police Monitors in 1994 and 1995.

Members of the State Department, United Nations and the Montreal Police Force accompanied Kelly.
