A woman tried to steal a baby when after the infant's mother went inside a Hasidic group's headquarters in Brooklyn Wednesday morning, according to the NYPD.

The 27-year-old mother was pushing her 13-month-old daughter in a carriage in front of the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights and decided to go inside.

Authorities said that when she came back out, the infant wasn't in the stroller, and she started screaming.

A worker at Chabad Lubavitch told News 4 that she saw the woman carrying the infant and praying. She said she didn't know that the woman was not the child's mother until she encountered the real mother, hysterical, a few moments later.

That's crazy, that's kidnapping," she said. "You don't take nobody's baby and walk away. You didn't come here with no baby."

Bystanders who had heard the mother caught the 26-year-old walking down the street with the infant in the stroller, witnesses and police said.

The woman was detained by police and may be at a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Charges against her are pending.
