Prisoner Gives Guard False Name, Walks Out of Brooklyn Courthouse: Police

A man accused in a shooting about five months ago walked out of a courtroom in Brooklyn Tuesday night after allegedly giving a city Correction Department worker a false name, authorities say.

Police say that the suspect was making an appearance for a hearing connected to the shooting at about 10:15 p.m. and lied to a guard about his name in an attempt to leave.

The correction officer apparently bought the lie, and police said he walked out of the courthouse. He's been on the lam since.

The Department of Correction said in a statement that "any erroneous release is unacceptable" and that Tuesday's incident was under investigation.

The correction officer involved in the release has also been suspended, officials said.

Anyone who knows anything about the escapee's whereabouts should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
