Boy Walks Out of School, No One Notices He's Missing

A mother and father in Queens want to know how their 5-year-old son was able to walk out of his school and onto the street without any of his teachers noticing.

Kindergartner Angelo Geremia Jr. left PS 229 in Woodside Wednesday morning and walked six blocks to his house. A neighbor saw the boy standing outside the front door screaming, and called his mother.

"Five years old, crossing streets in the pouring rain, no jacket, nothing," said the boy's father, Angelo Geremia Sr. "The school didn't even realize he was missing. My wife had to call them up and tell them that he was at my neighbor's home."

Angelo told his mother he left during a time-out. The school said he asked to use the bathroom during a lunch break and never came back.

The Department of Education said the school's principal is looking into the incident and reviewing staffing levels.
