Billy Joel to Sing National Anthem Before Game 3 of World Series at Citi Field

Billy Joel will sing the national anthem before Game 3 of the World Series at Citi Field Friday night, baseball officials confirmed.

Newsday notes the Long Island native has a long history with the Mets, including headlining the final two concerts at Shea Stadium in 2008.

The Mets have also used Joel's song "Piano Man" as a sing-along during the 8th inning break and at times have played "New York State of Mind" as the exit music following a win at Citi Field, the newspaper reports.

Last week, Joel sang "Meet the Mets" and gave score updates from Game 4 of the NLCS during a concert at Madison Square Garden.

Sports Illustrated assessed the announcement somewhat cynically with a reminder that each of the two times Joel sang at a Mets World Series game, the Mets lost: at Game 2 of the 1986 World Series against the Red Sox, and Game 1 of the 2000 World Series against the Yankees.
