‘Bait Car' Aims to Take Car Thieves for Ride

A very special vehicle is coming to Long Island to take car thieves for a ride.

The so-called "bait car" has hidden technologies to catch even savvy car thieves. A demo model of the vehicle was previewed Tuesday at the Suffolk District Attorney's Office.

As D-A Tom Spota drove the car in the parking lot, its engine suddenly stopped, the doors locked and the wheel seized. The effects were caused remotely from a nearby laptop computer.

The car, donated by the Allstate Insurance Company, will be in Suffolk County by the end of the month.

Long Island ranks second in New York state for the number of vehicle thefts, according to figures from Allstate and the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
