7 Local Things You Have to Do on Your Next Snow Day

Sometimes the weather can be frightful. The rain, snow and bitter cold can make any daily commute a pain, but when it snows enough, Mother Nature can give us the gift of a day off. When the schools are closed and you’re beginning to get cabin fever, it’s time for some snow day activities.

Here are 7 things to do on your next snow day:

1. Visit a Park

Bundle up and grab your sled or cross country skis. Next snow day, head to Central Park to build a snow man or to try a new activity like cross country skiing. Head to a park near you to have a snowball fight, or go sledding in your local neighborhood park.

2. Go Ice Skating

As cliché as it is, ice skating can be a fun winter activity on a snow day. Head to the iconic Rink at Rockefeller Center or the popular, and free, Bryant Park rink. If it’s too cold outside and you’d rather stay inside, go on to your local indoor ice skating rink.

3. Get lost in that museum you have always wanted to go to

You know that museum you said you were going to go to but have still never been? With some of the world’s most famous museums, New York City has plenty to choose from on your next snow day. Try the MoMA for a display of modern art or The Museum of the American Gangster if you’re looking for something a little different.

4. Cozy up in a bar with a fireplace

There’s nothing like warming up by a fire after a long day in the snow. Why not head to a cozy bar with a fireplace and warm up with a cocktail. Head to Shoolbred's, an East Village pub, and sink into the leather couches. In Connecticut, dine at Cava, an Italian restaurant and wine bar for a fireside drink.

5. Eat some comfort food

Sometime when it’s cold, all you need is some belly-warming food that reminds you of home. Get a grilled cheese sandwich at Earl's Beer & Cheese American Restaurant and Bar in East Harlem or get a cup of New England clam chowder to go at The Chowda House in Red Bank, New Jersey.

6. Get lost in a library

New York is home to the iconic New York Public Library. If you can’t make it to the city, check out your local public library and get lost looking for your next read.

7. Catch a Movie

A snow day is the perfect excuse to see the latest movies in the theater. Buy your popcorn and soda and warm up to the latest block busters. There are many out of the ordinary theaters in the city, like The Paris Theatre that shows only one movie at a time.
