7 People Shot, Three Fatally, in Newark



    Seven people have been shot, three fatally, in Newark. It happened at the "Stop One Meat Market" on South 12th Street and Avon Avenue. Newark Police are looking into the incident. (Published Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010)

    Seven people have been shot, three fatally in two separate shootings in Newark, police said.

    The first shooting happened just after 4:00 p.m.

    The gunplay rang out at the "Stop 1 Meat Market" on South 12th street and Avon avenue, leaving five people injured including two teenagers, who later pronounced dead.  Allen Best, 16, and Jarid Smith, 16, both of Newark died in the shooting. The other three people shot are expected to survive. 

    Police are also responded to the scene of another shooting in Newark just blocks away.

    The second shooting happened at Court Street and Lincoln Street where two more people were shot, one fatally, police said. Rodney Kearney, 30, of Newark died in that shooting, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
