3 Staten Island Men Hailed as Heroes After Rescuing Neighbors from Fire

Jose Lopez, Roland Ortiz and Jonas Caraballo sprung into action when they saw smoke coming from a neighbor's home in New Brighton

Three Staten Island men are being called heroes after rescuing their neighbors from a fire Wednesday morning.

Jose Lopez, Roland Ortiz and Jonas Caraballo sprung into action when they saw smoke coming from a neighbor's home on Corson Avenue in New Brighton.

The three men helped four people get out of the burning home, including a woman who can't walk.

"We brought her downstairs and searched the whole house looking for anybody," Lopez told NBC 4 New York. "We brought everybody outside."

Fortunately, several children who also live at the home were at school at the time.

No word yet on what caused the fire, which investigators say started in the home's basement.
