A 20-year-old Bronx high school student was taken into police custody after a gun was found in his bag on school grounds, police said.

A school safety agent discovered the weapon at Pulse High School in West Farms at about 10:00 a.m. Wednesday and called police, authorities said.

The student was taken into custody a short time later, police said.

"The NYPD immediately responded to this serious incident and we are working in close partnership with them as they conduct an investigation. The weapon was swiftly and safely confiscated, and all students and staff are safe," the New York City Department of Education said in a statement.
