2 Dead in Fiery Crash in Queens

Two people are dead after a fiery car crash Sunday in Queens, police said.

Police responding to a 911 call shortly before 4:30 a.m. Sunday found a car in flames with a driver and passenger inside. Fire officials were able to put out the flames, but both people had suffered severe burns and were declared dead at the scene, police said.

Witnesses said the car was traveling at a high speed when it crashed and exploded, according to police. Both victims were men in their 20s, but no one had come forward with a missing person report that matched the situation, police said. Investigators were attempting to learn more about their car, a 2001 Nissan Maxima, using the information that remains on the damaged license plates.

Investigators found that the car had been going east on the Grand Central Parkway service road when the driver lost control and struck construction scaffolding at Thomas Edison High School on 84th Avenue in Jamaica, according to police.
