Even though he'd originally trained as an image "retoucher", Denmark-based photographer Henrik Adamsen claims he's "not a huge fan of the digital look." The extreme clarity and almost "high-definition" realism of his images is owed to his tendency to avoid the computer as much as possible. "I guess it kinda contradicts the clean and simple thing," says Adamsen. "But I also like to get as much feeling and atmosphere into my shots [as possible], and my mess tends to push the shot in that direction."
His "mess," as he calls it, yields pretty extraordinary results. Adamsen's subjects are often va-va-voom beautiful and shot at extremely close range, creating a disconcerting feeling of intimacy between viewer and model.
The unusual positioning and facial expressions of his subjects have also become a signature of Adamsen's work, perhaps due to the relaxed, laid-back vibe he cultivates on set. "We always try to have fun at my shoots," he explains. "I can't stand bad moods. We laugh a lot, and it also helps the model to relax. I wouldn't do this if I didn't think it was fun. Of course I'm serious about what I do, but I really think that a good mood makes a huge difference."
Maybe it's just us, but we think the industry would benefit from a few more fashion folks who rely on fun and "good moods" to get the job done.
