There's something ominous in the lean lines and bright blobules that compose Bernadette Pascua's illustrations--but then again, there's something rather foreboding about the fashion industry these days. From somber runway collections to bleak business predictions, Pascua's work is sensitive to an appropriately melancholic, yet exquisitely beautiful, fashion ethos. Starting this month and lasting into the spring, Williamsburg boutique, Jumelle, will curate an online exhibition of Pascua's custom illustrations at ShopJumelle.com.
Pascua founded her mixed media blog, Decade Diary, to chronicle her "past, present interests, and future perspectives" on a decade spent living in New York City and Brooklyn; a decade that kicked off with two years of formal illustration education before earning a BFA in textiles and fabric styling. Aside from her blog--which she occasionally refers to as "homework, but in a good way"--and a healthy addiction to sample sales, Pascua is interested in pursuing a degree in Art Therapy: "I'll always love fashion, but I feel like it's an exhausting industry to participate in. I'd like to be able to contribute something real with my art."
