NYC to Test Partitions to Protect Bus Drivers

Similar partitions are bing used or tested in Chicago, Washington, Baltimore, and Milwaukee

New York City Transit officials said the agency will begin testing partitions in buses to protect drivers from unruly passengers.

The move is in response to the fatal stabbing of bus driver Edwin Thomas by a passenger after an argument over not paying a fare.

Under the pilot program, the partitions will be tested on buses out of the Flatbush Depot in Brooklyn, where Thomas worked.

It's not clear when the program will begin or how many buses will be involved.

A transit spokesman says the partitions still needed to be designed.

Bus partitions are now being used or tested in Chicago, Washington, Baltimore, and Milwaukee.
