With world leaders descending on New York City for the UN General Assembly this week, First Lady Michelle Obama will seize the opportunity to spread her healthy food campaign globally. She chose the Stone Barns Center in Pocantico Hills, NY as the setting for a First Lady luncheon on Friday when "the spouses of Chiefs of State and Heads of Government" will tour the non-profit farm and educational center.
Apart from spreading the sustainable gospel to local schools, aspiring farmers, and anyone else who's interested, Stone Barns houses chef Dan Barber's farm-to-table restaurant Blue Hill. The James Beard award winner and TIME100 alum recently returned from Spain where he joined the International Advisory Board for the Basque Culinary Center, so he's primed for diplomacy.
As a prolific writer and activist on the subject of local food, Barber also serves as the only chef on the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, which informs Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! campaign.
On Friday, after local kids show off their egg-collecting skills to nods of approval, Mrs. Obama and Barber will speak, and everyone, including the elegant first ladies who are less agriculturally-inclined, will take pleasure in a fine-dining lunch. [White House]
