Hear New Carissa's Wierd

This is a nice surprise: Hardly Art records, who are more accustomed to putting out the likes of up-and-coming left-field instigators, released today a b-side for a new single by the beloved Seattle outfit Carissa's Wierd.

The Seattle band, which must be said went on to spawn Band of Horses and Grand Archives among a stack of others, always had a cult following; last summer, fans were treated to a the tongue-in-cheek compilation They'll Only Miss You When You're Gone in advance of the collective's hard-to-find full lengths being reissued. But that hardly hinted at new material, despite playing a hometown reunion show.

The touchstone group for any indie nerd has aged its plodding chamber-pop remarkably well. On this cut, b/w for single "Tucson," they've refined a sound that was already quite combed-through, coming up with a hazy and hooky lament, with the chorus line "we will suddenly rise" seeming more foreshadow than simply narrative -- the band's announced it's playing a grip of shows coming up.  No word on New York shows yet.  (via CoS)
