U.S. Fencing Champs Reflect On Their Win

“You won the first medals for the United States,” Shaun Robinson reminded Mariel Zagunis, Sada Jacobson and Becca Ward, the three fencers, who swept the Gold, Silver and Bronze, respectively, in the Women’s Individual Sabre competition. “We are so proud of you — How does it feel, what was the moment like for you?”

“Obviously, it was a great moment for all of us,” Mariel told Shaun. “We made history here going 1, 2, 3 in our event.”

“I want to see some battle scars, I know you guys have them,” Shaun insisted, as Bronze medalist Becca Ward rolled up her sleeve to show us some of her battle wounds.

And the ladies were quite excited that after they got their medals, they got to go shake the hand of former president George H.W. Bush.

“So you were crying? Were you tearing up? He gave you his handkerchief, did you keep it?,” Shaun asked.

“No, I didn’t keep it,” Mariel replied.

“No! You gave it back,” Shaun asked.

“Don’t you know how much that would go for on eBay?”
