Phelps On Going For Spitz's Record; Lochte On Boys Talk Outside The Pool

Tonight, Michael Phelps will hit the water in a quest for not just Olympic gold, but Mark Spitz’s record of seven golds in one Olympic Games. And as has been the case every time he walks out of the cube, he does one interview after winning – with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush.

“Champ, we’re trying in the media to find different ways of putting this, and the latest we’ve heard — if you were your own nation, the ‘People’s Republic of Phelpistan,’ you’d be tied with Korea for gold medals in third,” Billy noted.

“I have no clue what to say,” Phelps responded. “It’s cool, I’m having fun and everything so far has gone as planned.”

With his mom and sisters cheering him on, Michael once again crushed the field in the 200 Individual Medley. The victory was made even sweeter as his teammate and good friend, the very laid-back Ryan Lochte, brought home the bronze.

“Lochte, you are a stud,” Billy said. “You guys were walking off together [after the race], you guys were laughing — what are you talking about?”

“Oh, I mean, we can talk about anything. Most likely it’s some girl that we saw,” the handsome swimmer answered.

“You guys pop out of the water and you said, ‘Did you see the blond in the second row? She was phenomenal?” Billy asked.

“That’s like, what we basically say to each other — just, it gets our mind off everything, swimming, everything,” Lochte said. “We just talk about girls.”

Lochte’s day in the pool was made even more amazing after he won a world record in the 200 Backstroke, his first individual gold ever.

Teammate Aaron Peirsol took the silver. Peirsol will be part of the relay team in Phelps’ eighth and final race on Sunday.

“Of course we admire his goals and by all means we’re going to do what we can to help him achieve his goal there,” Peirsol said.

But first, the thus far infallible Phelps will have to capture No. 7, the 100 Meter Butterfly, tonight.

“I think the semi-final this morning [will] set up hopefully a good final,” Phelps said. I have to take it out with those guys and lay it all on the line.”

“Is it fun seeing Kobe and Cindy Crawford and different people coming to watch you?” Billy asked.
