The Cuban Heel - Similar in shape, but slightly higher than a cowboy boot heel, this particular style originates from Latin countries where men donned heels for dancing. Rachel Comey's fall collection features several examples of the Cuban heel, including the "Barbaro" bootie ($355 at Mohawk General Store). Perfect for rolled up jeans, or leg-baring skirts.
The Kitten Heel - The name says it all: a more demure variation on the classic pump, the kitten heel is slim and slightly-curved, and nowhere near as towering as the stilletto. It's a great starter-heel for anyone who's a little height-phobic, and the classic, understated silhouette—seen here as a slingback (Lanvin, $680 at Matches)—is a perfect match for an elegant cocktail frock. Think of it as the Audrey Hepburn of heels.
The Wedge Boot - Wedges are making the leap from summer to fall by switching from sandals to heels (and we love it because we get to stay the same height this season). The thick bottoms lend a downtown vibe to any boot, especially low, ankle-grazing lace-up ones. We're smitten with J. Crew's "MacAlister" boot ($198 at J. Crew), which would pair jsut as well with thick opaque tights and a pleated skirt as they would with a pair of wide-leg, 70's-style trousers.
