Sarah Palin Wanted Katie Couric to Be Her BFF

Picture this: Sarah Palin and Katie Couric as best friends.

It's a scenario the veep candidate dreamed up as aides to John McCain pushed Palin to meet with the CBS anchorwoman after they suitably convinced her that Couric was a fan of the ex-Alaska guv and admired her as a fellow working mom. It's a small part of Palin's soon-to-be-released memoir but it could be the juiciest.

Stirred by the prospect of a budding friendship, Palin considered the option. But after aides told her that Couric's ratings and self esteem were both in the basement, Palin began to "feel sorry" for her and, out of the goodness of her heart, granted her an interview.

So Palin was completely caught off guard when Katie rudely rebuffed her friendship by rattling off "gotcha" questions ("What newspapers and magazines did you regularly read?") and refusing shower her in saccharine sentiments. She was "badgering" and partisan and blindsided Palin into giving a dreadful interview that sank her chances with most voters. At least Palin was able to steal her stylist.
