Thompson Rolls Out First Attack Ad of His Mayoral Campaign

Bill Thompson, the Democrat challenging Michael Bloomberg in this year's mayoral race, is running his first attack ads of the race.

One focuses on how Bloomberg had the term-limits law changed so he could run again. The other says New Yorkers are being squeezed by fees and taxes.

The ads start running Wednesday, Thompson's campaign said.

In the term limit ad, Thompson says Bloomberg "doesn't think your vote counts."

The 30-second commercial adheres to the tradition of making a candidate’s introductory ad biographical and positive — for the first 22 seconds, anyway, the New York Times reports.

It begins by touching on Thompson’s eight-year run as city comptroller, saying that he had uncovered $250 million in waste.

It weaves in scenes of Thompson talking to ordinary New Yorkers on the street and emphasizes his credentials as a defender of the middle class, saying that he opposed higher fares for mass transit, the Times said.

The Republican-turned-independent mayor persuaded the City Council to extend the term-limit law, dismissing calls for a voter referendum on the issue.

Bloomberg has been attacking Thompson on the airwaves for weeks. He has spent $64.8 million -- 16 times more money than Thompson.
