1 Dead, 1 Hurt After Garbage Truck Smashes Through Front of Empty School Bus in Monticello

The driver of an empty school bus was killed and the driver of a garbage truck was seriously injured when the two vehicles collided on a rural road in the Hudson Valley Friday morning, police say.

The two vehicles crashed head-on on New York Route 211 near Harmony Christian School in Wallkill at about 8 a.m., according to the New York State Police.

Chopper 4 footage from the scene shows the front end of the truck smashed into the front of the bus, which appears to be heavily damaged. Several emergency responders were at the crash site, and both lanes on the road were closed.

The driver of the school bus was pronounced dead shortly after the crash. The garbage truck driver was taken to Westchester Medical Center in serious condition.

Harmony Christian School principal Kevin Barry said that the vehicles collided a few minutes after the bus driver dropped children off for classes.

It's not immediately clear what caused the crash.
