Times Square Theater Evacuated Due to Smoke

An smoke condition due to an issue with a popcorn popper forced the evacuation of a Times Square movie theater Saturday night.

The incident at the AMC at the corner of 42nd and 8th came as police investigated an explosion in Chelsea roughly 20 blocks south that injured more than two dozen people.

There was no tie between the two incidents, though; moviegoers reported smoke in the theater at the time they were asked to leave.

An AMC spokesman said the smoke was caused by "an issue with a popcorn popper" and that the theater later reopened.
