One of the entrance ramps to the Tappan Zee Bridge will close Monday morning and won't reopen for the next four years while crews work on a new crossing over the Hudson River, officials say.
The northbound entrance ramp from state Route 9 will close at 10 a.m. and won’t reopen until 2018. Traffic to the bridge will be diverted to another ramp about a quarter-mile away.
The exit was closed for several nights in December, causing severe traffic jams. Officials say the detour itself didn’t cause the miles-long backups, blaming snowy weather, a truck fire and emergency repairs on the George Washington Bridge for the delays.
The ramp is being used as a construction staging area for the new $3.9 billion bridge.
Electronic signs will alert drivers to any problems.
