NY Man Who Punched Pregnant Wife Gets 7 Years

The man's wife miscarried the next day

A New York man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for several attacks on his wife including a punch that may have caused a miscarriage.

Vikas Jagota of New City was convicted in November of assault and abortion charges. The Rockland County district attorney's office said Friday that Jagota received the maximum sentence.

Prosecutors said that in May 2012, Jagota forced his wife's wrist through a glass cabinet and punched her in the head.

Four months later, they said, he punched her in the abdomen. She miscarried the next day.

District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said Jagota's attacks left his wife bloodied and emotionally scarred.

The May 2012 attack occurred on the day the defendant's brother was sentenced for an unrelated assault.
