Police Rescue Dog That Fell Through Ice in Long Island Pond

Police say a lucky Labrador retriever is back with its owner after falling through ice on a pond and being rescued by police.

The Suffolk County Police Department says officers were called to Spectacle Pond in Lake Ronkonkoma around 4 p.m. Thursday. A 911 caller had reported seeing a dog plunge through the ice.

Wearing a special suit, Emergency Service Officer Daniel Coan waded through a section of open water, broke ice around the trapped dog and carried the animal to shore.

Emergency Service Officers Gerry Sheridan, Walter Justincic and Michael Simpson assisted on the call.

The black Lab is named Guinness. It was taken to its home nearby.
