39 Arrested in Staten Island Gun-Drug Crackdown

Prosecutors and police say the 16-month investigation included undercover officers as well as electronic and physical surveillance

Authorities say 39 people have been arrested in a Staten Island drug and gun crackdown.

District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan says law enforcers used the code name "Operation Mayberry" because one of the defendants goes by the nickname "Opie."

But Donovan says none of the defendants resemble the "loveable characters" portrayed on "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s.

The charges include conspiring to commit murder, attempted murder, possessing and transporting illegal firearms, distributing and selling cocaine, stealing motorcycles and burglarizing homes.

Prosecutors and police say the 16-month investigation included undercover officers as well as electronic and physical surveillance. They say guns were recovered coming from Georgia and drugs came from Mexico, Canada, Texas and Pennsylvania.
