At least one person was treated for a heat-related illness after an outage cut power to a Long Island senior center for hours, police said.
The power outage hit Charles Monica Senior Village on Hicks Street and surrounding areas in Valley Stream on Wednesday afternoon and lasted for about four hours.
The outage came during a sunny day with temperatures nearing 90 degrees and humidity above 50 percent.
No one at the senior home was transported to a hospital, Nassau County police said. The condition of the person with the heat illness wasn't immediately known. There are nearly 200 units at the center, according to government records.
A PSE&G outage map showed an area of several blocks — bordered by South Central Avenue, West Merrick Road, Rockaway Avenue, and Sunrise Highway — affected by the outage.
Some 260 people lost power shortly before noon, according to the PSE&G. Power was restored shortly before 4 p.m., the utility company said.
The outage was caused by a primary cable failire, which was the result of a previous lightning strike, accoridng to PSE&G.
