Authorities say a man who was unloading equipment from a van on a northern New Jersey street was shot in the back in an attempted robbery.
Paterson police say the shooting occurred around 8 p.m. Saturday on Lafayette Street.
The victim, identified only as a 46-year-old Englewood resident, apparently struggled with his assailants and was shot once before the suspects ran off.
The man was able to get to a nearby firehouse, where he received preliminary treatment before being taken to a hospital. Authorities say the man remained hospitalized Sunday in serious but stable condition.
It did not appear that either assailant was injured during the struggle, and at least one of them had a handgun. It wasn't clear Sunday whether the assailants took anything during the robbery.
