Man Opens Fire in the Bronx, Wounds Young Girl

Gunfire in the Bronx has gravely wounded a 5-year-old girl.

The shooting happened at about 10:15 p.m. Friday in the borough's Soundview section.

Police said a gunman fired at least nine shots at a group of people, hitting a 15-year-old boy and a 24-year-old man, and striking the girl as she stood nearby. The slug hit her in the back.

She underwent emergency surgery at Jacobi Medical Center. The 15-year-old was hospitalized in stable condition and the older man suffered a leg wound.

The New York Daily News quotes a police source as saying: "Whoever this animal was, he didn't care," a source said. "He was shooting in the direction [of the little girl]."

Police were trying to identify and locate a suspect on Saturday.
