Witnesses Hold Long Island Fatal Stabbing Suspect Until Officers Arrive: Police

Witnesses who saw a man getting stabbed in a Long Island street Sunday kept the alleged suspect from leaving the scene until officers arrived, police say.

Suffolk County police responding to a call of people yelling on Pinewood Avenue in Islip found 40-year-old Carlos Velasquez in the street with stab wounds to his torso. Velasquez was taken to the hospital, police say, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses at the scene identified Wilfredo Flores as the suspect in the stabbing, police say, and held him there until officers arrived. Flores, 28, has been charged with first-degree manslaughter.

It’s not immediately known if Flores has an attorney.
