Suffolk County police have arrested an East Islip man for driving drunk in an accident that killed a pedestrian Monday morning.

Richard Hughes, 49, was intoxicated when he struck two pedestrians on Route 110 near Ritter Avenue in North Amityville at about 6 a.m., authorities allege. One of the pedestrians, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other pedestrian was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow in critical condition, said authorities.

The victims' identities are being withheld until their families are notified, said authorities.

Hughes, 49, was charged with driving while intoxicated and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.
