A 27-year-old woman and her 4 and 1-year-old children were hit by a town car as they tried to cross a New Jersey street Monday, authorities say.
The woman was crossing Route 9 near River Avenue and Edgewood Court in Lakewood when they were hit by the Lincoln Town Car shortly before 10 p.m.
The two children, the youngest of whom was in a stroller, were taken to a hospital in critical condition with serious head injuries, police said. The mother sustained a facial laceration and was listed in stable condition at the hospital Tuesday.
The driver of the town car, a 50-year-old Toms River man, stayed at the scene. He was traveling north at the time of the accident. It wasn't clear if charges would be filed.
Route 9 was closed for several hours in the area while authorities investigated.
