30 Sickened at Long Island Grocery Store, Elevated Carbon Monoxide Found

People reported feeling sick inside the Best Yet Market in Franklin Square

Thirty people became dizzy and nauseated at a Long Island grocery store Friday morning where authorities said they detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide.

Nineteen people were taken to the hospital; five were admitted and were undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatment, a spokeswoman said.

Nassau County Police said another 12 people were treated at the store, a Best Yet Market in Franklin Square.

Police said they were called to the Best Yet Market at about 10:45 a.m. for a report of a "foul odor," and when they arrived, numerous people were suffering from headaches, dizziness and nausea.

The Franklin Square Fire Department found elevated levels of carbon monoxide, police said.

A lawyer for the store said most of the people sickened were workers.

The store was evacuated, ventilated and inspected, and authorities could not find the source of carbon monoxide. The levels had dissipated by the afternoon, and the store was reopened by about 3:15 p.m.
