87-Year-Old Dies in Lower East Side Fire: Police

An 87-year-old woman died in a fire inside her building on Madison Street on the Lower East Side.

Police say an 87-year-old woman died in a fire in her Manhattan apartment early Saturday.

Officials say firefighters discovered the woman after putting out the blaze at 345 Madison St. on the Lower East Side at around 1 a.m.

The woman, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead after being taken to Cornell Hospital.

No word yet on what may have caused the fire.
