    Two people died in Newark early Saturday when the car they were in crashed into a utility pole on McCarter Highway, police said.

    The driver of the car, Andrew Negrin, 21, of Harrison, N.J. and the passenger, Amanda M. Velez, 23, of Belleville, N.J., were pronounced dead shortly after police got to the scene following the 4:30 a.m. crash near Miller Street, according to officials. 

    The circumstances surrounding the crash are being investigated.
