Gov. David Paterson calls it the largest solar energy project in New York state history.

Paterson says the state is moving forward on a 50 megawatt project that would provide enough power to sustain more than 6,500 households and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20,000 tons per year.

He made the announcement Friday at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island.

A 36.9 megawatt project will be built at the Brookhaven lab, and 13.1 megawatt projects are planned at other locations on Long Island.
