SpongeBob SquarePants Coming to Broadway

SpongeBob SquarePants is making the move from his pineapple under the sea to the Great White Way, in a new musical set to hit Broadway in the 2016-17 season.

“The SpongeBob Musical” will follow the popular Nickelodeon character and his band of friends in a new journey set to originals songs from some of music’s biggest names, including David Bowie, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, Panic! At the Disco, Cyndi Lauper, Dirty Projectors, Jonathan Coulton and The Flaming Lips will also write new songs to fill out the score. Music supervision will come from Tony winner Tom Kitt (“Next to Normal”), with a book coming from Kyle Jarrow (“Whisper House”).

The project co-conceived and directed by Tina Landau (“Superior Donuts”), who says she was attracted to the ensemble nature of the material.

“[SpongeBob’s] the classic underdog hero,” she explained. “Our production sets him on a hero’s journey with real stakes, all the while retaining the show’s trippy humor and irreverence.”

Landau also said that their actors won’t be using prosthetics or costumes to bring the show’s characters to life.

“The SpongeBob Musical” will have its world premiere in Chicago’s Oriental Theatre beginning June 7, 2016, in a limited engagement through July 3. Casting is expected to be announced shortly.
