Zsa Zsa Gabor Recovering From Leg Amputation Surgery

Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor had much of her right leg amputated Friday due to persistent blood clots and an infection that permeated the bone, according to her publicist.

Gabor, 93, was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center last week and had been undergoing treatment to see if the amputation could be avoided, but publicist John Blanchette said the operation became a necessity.

"This is a very dangerous operation for someone her age," Blanchette said. "But she will die otherwise."

Doctors said the surgery to remove about three-quarters of Gabor's right leg was successful and there were no complications. She was expected to remain under close observation at the hospital. According to The Associated Press, Blanchette said that the actress would remain the hospital for 1-2 weeks and possibly be home before her 94th birthday.

Gabor fell out of bed and broke her hip July 17. She underwent hip- replacement surgery and was sent home about a month later, but she went back to the hospital two days later after developing blood clots.

Gabor was given last rites at the hospital Aug. 15 and was brought home to her Bel Air Road mansion the following day after declining any more procedures.

She was taken back to the hospital Aug. 31 after her husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt found her unresponsive. She was stabilized at the hospital and returned home.

Zsa Zsa is the last of the three glamorous Gabor sisters, all of whom had careers in show business. Magda, the eldest, died in 1997 at age 82. Eva, who starred in the 1960s CBS sitcom "Green Acres," died in 1995 at age 76.
