Chaz Bono Happy to be a Man

It was "now or never" to make the change, Bono says

Chaz Bono says he’s experiencing puberty for the second time – and loves the life it took him decades to achieve.

Born the daughter of Sonny and Cher, Bono says in his first interview since undergoing gender-assignment surgery in March that his sex drive and muscle growth have each ramped up and he’s noticed his voice lower.

It was a “relief” to finally have his breasts removed, Bono tells Entertainment Tonight in the first of a two-part interview that aired Thursday.

"I always felt like the male from the time I was a child,” Bono said, Usmagazine.com reported. “There wasn't much feminine about me.

"I believe that gender is something between your ears, not between your legs. That is something I discovered in the early '90s. It was just a long process of being comfortable enough to do something about it."

The 40-year-old, who used to be known as Chastity, said he never could have gone through with the surgery without getting “clean and sober in 2004.”

It was “now or never” to take the next step, he said.
