Russell Brand to Divorce Katy Perry

"I'll always adore her," Brand says of pop star.

Russell Brand and Katy Perry are splitting up.

Following days of rumors that their relationship was on the rocks, Brand, 36, filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Friday.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends," the Associated Press quoted Brand as saying.

Divorce filings obtained by TMZ cite irreconcilable differences.

Perry and Brand began dating after running into each other at the September 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where Brand hosted and she performed.

They were married just over a year later in a spectacular wedding ceremony in northern India. The wedding weekend included a Bollywood-themed party filled with drummers and acrobats.

Stylish and funny, the couple have been a fixture on the awards show circuit and a paparazzi favorite while out shopping or heading to the gym since they met. They have fended off rumors of separation before, often taking to Twitter.

Perry is coming off a spectacular year as a pop star, earning five No. 1 singles off her 2010 album, “Teenage Dream,” and becoming the first female artist to do so. She broke into the charts in 2008 with the provocative single “I Kissed a Girl.” Noted for her cutesy-glam — some would say bizarre — ensembles, Perry raised eyebrows when she appeared on "Sesame Street" in a low-cut dress.

Brand is a British comedian who made his name giving first-person accounts of his battles with drug and sex addiction, writing his memoirs “My Booky Wook” in 2007. He first hosted the MTV Awards in 2008, catching Americans’ attention with cracks about George Bush and Britney Spears, and opening the door for an acting career. He played Aldous Snow in 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” a rock star with his own issues, who later became the main character in “Get Him to the Greek.”  Most recently he starred the remake of "Arthur," which bombed at the box office.
