This week, Barneys' Madison Avenue flagship welcomed a new seventh floor tenant: One year-old Italian menswear brand Uman.
The 300-square-foot boutique showcases founder (and former Brioni chief) Umberto Angeloni's signature attention to conceptual detail: Mid-century modern lighting and chairs, 17th-century tapestries (lining both the walls and the suiting), and a prominently displayed copy of Angeloni's self-penned label breakdown, The Lexicon. The collection -- a mix of pure wool and wool-silk suits, sport coats, and cashmere blazers -- retails for $2995-$3150. As Tom Kalenderian, executive vice president and menswear general merchandise manager, told WWD, “We’re selling suits, but we’re also selling culture."
This marks the fourth global retailer for designer and former Brioni chief Umberto Angeloni. Current retailers include Harrods (London), Lane Crawford (Hong Kong), and Braun (Germany). Barneys San Francisco and Tsum in Moscow will carry the line come fall.
