Yank's Train Station Has Everything But Bathrooms

New transit option? Good. Design flaw? Bad

The Yankees joined Mayor Bloomberg for a ceremony to open the new $91 million Metro-North train station serving Yankee Stadium. It's a great addition to the area, which should cut down on the cars headed to and from the Stadium. That's good for traffic and good for stopping tipsy people from getting behind the wheel.

The station has just one small problem, however. Nowhere in that $91 million budget was there a line item for toilets, urinals or anything else having to do with going to the bathroom. While train station bathrooms have long been the go-to for when one needs a disgusting comparison, they do serve a pretty useful role in the lives of commuters. So what gives?

A Metro-North spokesman explained that restrooms typically aren't featured in new stations since "all our trains have them."

All your trains don't run on time, though, and Mayor Bloomberg predicted 10,000 fans would use the station on game days. Do you really want to see what happens when thousands of fans are waiting on a delayed train on the Hudson line? That's a recipe for disaster if ever there's been one, and god help the passengers already on that train when the cramped bladders of Yankee Stadium storm the train when it finally arrives.

There is one positive to the situation. There's no chance of a repeat of the situation at Citi Field which left a woman's arm stuck in a toilet. So just remind yourself of that if you're waiting for a drain while dancing on the tips of your toes.
