China Puts On Show of Force to Block Rally

At two in the afternoon Sunday, residents around China took a stroll--a low-key expression of their disdain for certain government policies. But the authorities were prepared. In Beijing, rows of police vehicles were parked on side streets near the one of the so-called Jasmine Rallies. Reporters found that they could no longer send text messages or tweet due to interference with the 3G signal, and policemen began checking people's IDs. Bloomberg reports that Shanghai tightened security as well.
