Marchers in New York City's annual Veterans Day parade have been greeted by some enthusiastic well-wishers waving small American flags and holding up signs that say "thank you."
In response, some of the veterans have saluted to the crowd, or strolled over to shake people's hands along the Fifth Avenue parade route.
Organizers estimate 20,000 people are participating in the Tuesday parade -- including active duty military, civic and youth groups. Marching bands, floats and historic military vehicles also are featured.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg started the annual observance by placing a wreath at the Eternal Light Monument in Manhattan's Madison Square Park.
President Bush and Gov. David Paterson spoke at the formal rededication of the Intrepid, a World War II aircraft carrier that's now a museum.
